Linear growth of soft-shell clams, Mya arenaria L., was studied at six locations in the White Sea situated in the middle and low tidal zones. The main aim was to analyse the growth heterogeneity both within beds (with respect to individual growth) and between beds (with respect to group growth). Mya population was characterized by a slow growth and a long lifespan. Maximum shell size was 70

It neither occurs in Stone Age kitchen middens nor in marine deposits from that period (Hessland, 1946; Petersen et al., 2005).Nor has it been found in Roman or post-Roman middens (Bernard, 1979). M. arenaria . can grow up to 150 mm in length and 80 mm or more in width, yet most commercial clams in the Chesapeake Bay are less than 100 mm in length (Wheaton et al., 2008). Growth rates of .

Increasing juvenile soft-shell clam (Mya arenaria) recruitment has been the focus of several shellfish committees along the New England coast in an effort to increase harvestable biomass. This study recreated three previously used enhancement techniques to determine if the treatments had any effect on juvenile soft-shell clam recruitment. juvenile Mya arenaria burrowed into sediment of different Ω aragonite after 20 mins was tested for effects of Ω aragonite and clam size class (0.5-1.5 mm and 1.51-2.5 mm).. 103 Table 2.4. We present some of the few suspension-feeding measurements and to our knowledge the first velocity-field measurements for early post-settlement juvenile bivalve clams.

To evaluate the importance of passive transport due to currents, an experimental flume study was designed. ePIC (electronic Publication Information Center) is the official repository for publications and presentations of Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) H M. arenaria 80000 m0 40000 20000 P1 E 0 0 120000 100000 M. arenaria 80000 60000 40000 20000 0 I~OOO, October 28 T 10000 - M. arenaria 5000 - 0 Station 1 Station 2 Fig. 2.

There was no evidence of negative adult-juvenile interaction. M. arenaria was not attracted by seagrass or projecting shell beds - the latter indicating erosion of the sediment - as abundances of adults and juveniles were generally low in these habitats. The effects of sediment type and of the bioturbating lugworm Arenicola marina were inconsistent.

As early as 1245, some 250 years before Columbus voyage to the New World, the soft-shelled clam Mya arenaria was transported from its native northwest Atlantic shores to northern Jutland in Denmark (Petersen et al., 1992), making this the oldest recorded introduction of a marine species beyond its natural range.

In order to indentify factors causing spatial patterns in the bivalve Mya arenaria, abundances of juveniles and adults, as well as death assemblages were recorded on a 20 km scale in the intertidal zone of the Sylt-Rømø bight. Mya arenariacurrently occupies a wide geographical range in the northern hemisphere, on both coasts of the Atlantic as well as on the Pacific east coast.

Earlier studies demonstrated that densities of 0-y-old individuals of Mya arenaria L. were lower in Washington County on the eastern Maine coast than in Cumberland County on the southern Maine coast.
